Origami Fan Earrings

In early China, well known for fan making, fan was traditional used to show social status and gender. Fans were first made with feathers and leaves and used for cooling down and as cover from the sunlight. Later, the fan was improved and modified from round to half-moon shaped (semi-circle) and then to folding fans using materials such as ivory, wood, bones, silk and ect. Paintings or poems were often painted on the fan to enhance its beauty.

The folding fan was introduced to China from Japan. Chinese dancers and Japanese Geishas uses folding fans for their fan dancing. Amazingly, the fan was also used as a weapon in both Japanese and Chinese cultures. Weapon fans were made out of wood, iron, or steel. There is martial art for the war fans called Tessenjutsu.
