Origami Crane Earrings

In both ancient Chinese and Japanese culture, the crane symbolizes longevity and prosperity because the crane was believed to live a 1000 year life span. There is also a Japanese legend, Senbazuru, in which if anyone folds 1000 origami cranes, then his or her wish will come true.

Modern Japanese version of the Senbazuru tells a story about a very sick girl, Sadako Sasaki, who wished to be healthy again. She was close to completing 1000 origami cranes but died from leukemia caused by the radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Thus the crane also came to symbolize peace.
